Publishing Model
Open Access is a publishing model that provides immediate, subscription free access to the full text of published articles. Moreover, authors who publish in Open Access journals retain the copyright of their article. All articles published are made freely and permanently accessible online immediately upon publication. To ensure digital preservation for the future, our electronic publications will be archived with Portico and PMC.

Article Processing Charges
In the Open Access model, publication costs are usually covered by the author’s institution or research funds. These Article Processing Charges (APCs) replace subscription charges and allow the publishers to make the published material freely available to all interested online readers. At the time of submission, for complete transparency regarding APCs, authors are mandated to accept the clearly written APCs or state that they have a waiver. The APC for an article will be determined from the date on which the article is accepted for publication. For all transactions, a legal invoice is issued according to European and National Tax legislation. Upon acceptance, a proforma invoice is created, and upon publication, a final invoice is issued. A Proforma invoice can be requested at the time of acceptance should that be needed by the administrative services of the author's institution. APCs are payable within 30 days of the invoice date. There are no fees or any Article Processing Charges (APC) required for submission, editorial processing, page processing or withdrawing of an article.
Articles that are accepted for publication in
Tobacco Induced Diseases carry an APC of
2400 Euro exclusive of VAT where applicable, unless one of the below criteria apply:
- All manuscripts from Low-Income Countries are automatically granted a waiver, while manuscripts from Low Middle-Income Countries are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. As tobacco use is a global public health issue our vision is that it is imperative to aid regional tobacco control research from developing countries and hence our belief is that APCs from High and High Middle-Income Countries are to be used to support the publication of research from Low and Low Middle-Income countries.
- Editorials and Letters to the Editor do not have any APCs.
The journal provides download statistics for each article published. These can be seen from the "stats" download tab next to each article. These refer to direct downloads from the journal website and does not indicate accesses from other websites or databases.
